Acting Warden’s Message

It is indeed with great pleasure that I contribute these few words to the souvenir for the 12th Junior Rugby Carnival.

Junior Rugby has gained popularity over the years and this is undoubtedly the premier event in the junior Rugby calendar. It also enables Rugby skills to be developed at a very young age. As in the past, I am sure this year too we will witness a very exiting day.

The organization of this event requires enormous effort and team work and I thank the coaches for their guidance and encouragement at all times and the teachers in charge of junior rugby and the Organising Committee made up of parents for all their effort in organizing this event.

Finally I wish all participants all the very best and look forward to an eventful day of keen competition and sportsmanship.

Esto Perpetua !

Mr. H. D. Perera
Acting Warden
S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia

Message from the president of OTRFU

It with great pleasure that I send this message to the souvenir, publishing to mark the 12th annual STC junior rugby carnival, scheduled to be held on the 4th April 2009 at Mount Lavinia. This event is of special significant to me personally, having played rugby for STC over half a century ago, as Vice Captain in 1959 and my son Gihan, having captained the College 1st XV over quarter of a century ago in 1983 and now to see my 7 year old grand son Jaan, running around with a rugby ball on the same grounds, is truly a great feeling!

This is easily the greatest and the most popular rugby event at STC Mount Lavinia. The participation of over 200 children playing three matches concurrently on one ground with their parents, grand parents, uncles and aunties cheering their kids is the ideal foundation for Thomian rugby. All credit for this unique achievement for 12 consecutive year must go to Shanaka de Livera who is undoubtedly the father of Junior Rugby at STC.

On behalf of the OTRFU, I extend my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to the Chairman carnival organizing committee Shanaka, the vivacious Secretary Dilki and the other members of the organizing committee on the memorable occasion.

Esto Perpetua !

President, OTRFU

Message from Chairman Rugby Advisory Committee

It is with great pleasure that I write this message on the occasion of the Junior Rugby Carnival of S. Thomas’ College.

The Rugby Carnival has made a tremendous contribution to the development of the Rugby football at S. Thomas’. The sport is thriving at College as never before and the young Thomians participating in today’s event are truly privileged to have this wonderful opportunity to showcase their talents.

Rugby football is a game that requires tremendous courage, passion and perseverance. The Greek word of perseverance means ‘to remain under’ or the ability to stay under the pressure of the current difficulty and the challenges with a steady spirit, until a task is accomplished. This is just one of the lessons that the gentlemen who choose to play this great game learn and it hold them in good stead through out their lives.

I am delighted at the encouragement and support given to Rugby football at College by parents and acting Warden, under whose guiding hand, the sport is flourishing.

I wish all the players very best and all success and thank the organizers for a job well done.
