It was in the back yards of Moratuwa that I first started
playing cricket for the sheer love of the game. I was never a
copy _book player. I had my self made style which was the savage
instinct to hit the ball hard.
I was selected to play for the St. Sebastian's College 1st
XI team in 1968. It gave me great joy.
When I was gradually reaching the peak in school cricket at
Moratuwa for best reasons known to my parents I was given the
golden opportunity of joining that prestigious college at Mount
Lavinia.
I played for college from 1970-1972. The best year of my school
career was in 1972 when I scored the record breaking 184 at the
Royal - Thomian cricket encounter. This same year I was chosen
to represent Sri Lanka .against Pakistan which was captained by
Intikab Alam.
My years as a Sri
Lanka Cricketer, Captain / Manager / Chairman of Selectors, at
present Director Development of Cricket (Sri Lanka) and Chairman
Cricket Development Committee Asia must also be shared by my
Alma Mater, for if not for the grounding I had from this college
I would not be where I am today.
I would wish to thank
those wonderful people who made me a cricketing gentleman. Mr.
George Ponniah - Coach, Mr. Lassie Abeywardena - Master - in -
charge and Warden Mr. Anandanayagam.
I will always count on
my blessings for the ideal conditions that prevailed at S.
Thomas' College for cricket and also for the much needed inner
strength given to me, to take both victory and defeat alike.
May S. Thomas' College
go from strength to strength and produce many international
cricketers in the years to come.
